Episode 12: Trials, Trauma, and Triumph

Triumph over Trials: Will Haugerud’s Inspiring Story

In this episode of the Real High School podcast, Will Haugerud (also known as the “Sober Bow Tie Guy”) shares his story with us. He has navigated some of life’s most challenging storms — cancer, divorce, addiction, and financial ruin during the 2008 recession. His journey is a testament to our capacity to overcome adversity.

Will grew up in what he describes as a dysfunctional family, where love, affection, and attention were scarce. From the young age of about 10, he had to become an adult early and take care of himself financially. While he was able to quickly learn important life skills there was still an emotional gap that he struggled to fill. Will’s early encounter with alcohol at 16 marked the beginning of a long battle with alcoholism that he struggled with for decades.

His turning point was the 2008 financial crisis. After losing his job, he struggled with unemployment for over 6 years. He lost everything he had built over the past 15 years. This loss shook his identity - what it meant to be a provider and what it meant to be successful.

The turning point came in 2017, a year Will describes as both the worst and most transformative of his life. After a series of life-threatening incidents and a deep personal rock bottom, Will decided to take control of his life. He bravely checked himself into a hospital to prevent taking his own life. That was the start of his journey towards recovery.

One of the things that I’ve learned is this lesson of being open honest and vulnerable... because you know what we’re all experiencing hurts we’re all experiencing trials traumas obstacles challenges whatever you want to call them
— WILL HAUGERUD

Will’s story is not just about his struggles but also about the steps he took toward healing and finding his true purpose. Will highlights the importance of community, the power of vulnerability, and the need to redefine one’s identity beyond life's roles and material success.

Today, Will lives a life of intentional sobriety and purpose, helping others navigate their paths through his six-step recovery program, inspired by his experiences and a deeper understanding of personal transformation. He is a powerful reminder of the possibility of redemption and the power of human resilience.

Will’s story is a reminder and example for anyone facing their dark moments, that with support, faith, and inner work, it is possible to not only survive but come out the other side stronger and more purposeful. His story reminds us that it’s never too late to transform your life.
